About localtrails.ch
localtrails.ch is an interactive map of mountain bike trails in Switzerland: singletracks with difficulty ratings, elevation profiles and photos — plus the official closures and detours from SchweizMobil.
Where the trails come from
The trails are recorded by the organisations that build them, look after them or are responsible for them: bike clubs, trail builders, cable cars and bike parks, tourism destinations and municipalities. Each one edits only the trails in its own area, and the trail page shows who looks after a trail. That way the map only shows trails that are official and looked after – which is also why it grows slowly.

Difficulty
Trails are rated on the official Swiss scale, developed by SchweizMobil and the BFU for the implementation guidance to the Cycle Path Act — the same grading Swiss trails are signposted with. Five grades, from very easy (green) through easy (blue), medium (red) and difficult (black) to very difficult (violet). The rating is an estimate and doesn't replace your own judgment on the ground.
Data
Maps and aerial imagery come from swisstopo, the trail network from swissTLM3D and OpenStreetMap. Closures, detours and the Mountainbikeland routes come from SchweizMobil and the Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) respectively. Descriptions, ratings and photos come from the organisations that look after the trails; length and elevation profile are computed from swisstopo elevation data.
Safety and courtesy
Trails are shared with others: hikers have right of way, livestock fences should stay closed, and wildlife refuge zones and closures should be respected. The information on this map comes without guarantee — conditions on the ground can change at any time.
Beta
The site is just getting started: only a few trails are on the map so far, and new organisations and trails are joining all the time. Features are still being added and may change.
